About Penny Harbour

A documentary information archive on minor fishing ports along the Italian Adriatic coast — their infrastructure, craft traditions, regulatory context, and the communities that maintain them.

Scope and Purpose

Penny Harbour focuses on the minor ports — those handling fewer than 5,000 tonnes annually, with resident fleets of under 100 registered vessels. The major commercial harbours of Ancona, Rimini, and Chioggia appear in the context of the networks they anchor, but the primary interest is in the smaller ports that rarely appear in national-level reporting: Marano Lagunare, Giulianova, Termoli, Numana, Manfredonia, Molfetta, Otranto.

The resource covers harbour infrastructure (quay capacity, cold storage, auction facilities), traditional boat types and construction methods, the regulatory frameworks governing catch quotas and licensing, and the demographic and social conditions of port communities. It does not cover recreational boating, maritime tourism, or ports primarily oriented toward freight or ferry traffic.

Sources and Methodology

Content draws on publicly available Italian and EU institutional sources: ISTAT census data, MIPAAF fisheries statistics, harbour authority annual reports, GFCM and ICES stock assessment publications, and regional fisheries research produced by bodies including NISEA and IREPA. Where third-party research is cited, the original source is linked directly.

All content is reviewed before publication against the cited source material. Where statistics are used, the reference date and source are stated in the text or in a disclaimer at the end of the article. Figures that change annually (quota allocations, fleet registration counts, population totals) are dated at publication and updated on a rolling basis when new data is released by the relevant authority.
